What is a denture reline?

A denture reline is a process performed by a dentist or dental laboratory technician to adjust the fit of an existing denture. Over time, the bone and gum tissues in the mouth may change, resulting in loose-fitting dentures or discomfort. A denture reline helps to improve the fit and stability of the denture, making it more comfortable for the wearer.

There are two types of denture relines: hard reline and soft reline.

1. Hard reline: In a hard reline, a new layer of acrylic material is added to the denture base to adjust its fit. The existing denture is first cleaned thoroughly, and then a putty-like impression material is placed around the denture to create an accurate mold of the oral tissues. This mold is sent to a dental laboratory where a technician pours plaster or stone to create a model of the mouth. The denture is then adjusted and lined with a new layer of acrylic that matches the shape of the model. Finally, the reline is polished and placed back in the mouth.

2. Soft reline: A soft reline uses a flexible material such as silicone or a soft denture liner to improve denture comfort. The denture is first cleaned, and then the soft material is applied to the fitting surface. Once the material sets, the denture is placed back in the mouth. Soft relines are particularly beneficial for individuals with thin or sensitive gums.

Denture relines can help to address problems such as loose or ill-fitting dentures, mouth sores, difficulties with chewing, and speech issues. They restore proper oral function, improve comfort, and enhance the overall fit of the denture.

It is recommended to get denture relines every 2-3 years, as changes in the mouth and bone structure occur over time. Regular dental check-ups are essential to assess the need for relining and prevent any oral health problems.
